From Legacy to Modern: BlueSoft and GATX’s Integration Journey

Challenge

GATX is a global leader in railcar leasing, dedicated to delivering high-value, reliable freight car solutions across various industries. Their success depends on efficient fleet management, backed by smart technology and seamless data integration.

GATX’s success relies on the timely and efficient management of its fleet to maximize value for its customers.  This involves streamlining large volumes of data across various systems, including geolocation, mileage, maintenance, and external data sources. Key information had to be made accessible via APIs to internal and external consumers.

Historically, GATX managed integration by using a combination of peer-to-peer and local ESB (Enterprise Service Bus). However, as data demands increased, operations scaled, and new integration requirements emerged, several challenges became evident:

  • limited maintainability of existing integration solutions,
  • reduced adaptability to evolving business needs,
  • increasing costs associated with provisioning and managing on-premises infrastructure.

These challenges prompted GATX to take a significant step toward adopting an enterprise-grade integration platform—one that could meet expectations for scalability, performance, maintainability, adaptability, and cost-effectiveness, ultimately enabling faster innovation and operational efficiency.

Another key driver behind this decision was GATX’s ongoing digital transformation. The company required a robust, flexible, and future-proof integration platform capable of supporting its evolving landscape for years to come.  Crucially, the chosen solution had to serve the entire GATX group of companies—ensuring consistent, group-wide integration standards and long-term business agility.

Solution

The BlueSoft team supported GATX in selecting an enterprise-grade integration solution. With over 20 years of experience and integration as one of our core competencies, we were well-positioned to assist GATX in choosing the right platform. Our support included platform selection, initial sizing, deployment model recommendation, and architectural guidance.

BlueSoft recommended and implemented the MuleSoft Anypoint Platform on CloudHub 2.0. The project was executed in four key phases:

  1. Platform Selection and Planning
  • Evaluation and selection of the integration platform
  • Determination of the optimal deployment model
  • Initial sizing and capacity planning
  1. CloudHub Setup and Configuration
  • Establishment of the CloudHub 2.0 environment
  • Configuration of key components for scalability and security
  1. Tooling and Governance Implementation
  • Adoption of an API-led connectivity approach to ensure clear separation between system, process, and experience layers—promoting reusability and reducing tight coupling
  • Integration of CI/CD tools to streamline development workflows and automate deployment processes
  • Enforcement of quality assurance practices, including unit testing and automated static code analysis
  1. Integration Development and Migration
  • Ongoing development of new integrations
  • Migration of legacy integrations to the CloudHub 2.0 platform

Results

Within a year of the platform’s initial setup, the BlueSoft team—working in close collaboration with GATX’s integration team—successfully developed numerous new integrations from scratch and migrated a significant number of legacy integrations to CloudHub.

These integrations now connect a broad range of systems, including ERP platforms, telematics data providers, and both internal and external data sources essential for reporting, compliance, and operational efficiency.

Key outcomes include:

  • Accelerated Time to Market
The time required to deliver a single API—from concept to production—has been reduced to just a few days. In cases involving highly generic system APIs, this timeframe has been shortened even further, to just a few hours.
  • Centralized Monitoring and Management
All applications are now monitored and managed through Anypoint API Manager and Anypoint Monitoring offering improved visibility, control, and operational efficiency.

Client’s view

“From day one, our collaboration with BlueSoft has felt like a true partnership. Their team has brought not only deep technical expertise in enterprise integration, but also a strong grasp of our business context and long-term goals.

They were proactive, flexible, and consistently focused on delivering value – whether it was helping us choose the right platform, designing scalable architecture, or implementing robust governance practices. What impressed us most was how seamlessly they integrated with our internal team, sharing knowledge, co-creating solutions, and building lasting capabilities. Thanks to BlueSoft’s expertise, we now have a modern, future-ready integration landscape that supports our digital transformation across the entire GATX group.”
